Canada Disability is defined as any impairment, including physical, psychological, intellectual, cognitive, learning, communication, or sensory impairments or functional limitations that combined with various other barriers, hinders a person’s ability to work or engage in the activities of daily living.
The government measures a person’s disabilities and impairments to determine if they are competitively unemployable. The benefit is payable for persons up to age 65. A Disability Tax Credit is given to people with disabilities who meet specific criteria. To qualify, a medical practitioner must certify that you have a severe and prolonged impairment that significantly limits your ability to perform basic activities and impacts your ability to live and function.
A Disability Tax Credit can pay a maximum of $2,400 per year or $200 per month. There are 4 main types of disabilities: physical, sensory, intellectual/developmental, and mental health/behavioral. To qualify, it must be determined that you cannot do work at the substantial gainful activity level because of your medical condition. You cannot do work you did previously or adjust to other work because of your medical condition. Your condition must also last for at least 1 year (12 consecutive months) or result in death.
